A lot has changed since the internet was created. Social media, search engine optimization, and a 24/7 news cycle in which information is shared at a quick pace have made digital marketing tactics more effective than ever before. More people are making a living online than ever before too, so it’s no wonder that ecommerce is becoming an integral part of business strategy for online businesses as well as brick and mortar ones.

But, just like anything else in business, digital marketing is a moving target. We see it every day. A new technology comes out, and we all have to get on board or risk falling behind. Every month there’s a new method of using the internet that has people wondering if it really works and if so, are consumers willing to pay for it. All this can be exhausting, but most of us have to stay at the forefront of this moving target or face an uncertain future.

But the good news is that while things are changing, they can stay mostly the same, so the best advice I can give you is to follow these six rules:

It’s important to have a budget and an overall marketing strategy. Without them, you will have no idea when and if to implement any changes. You need to hear regularly from clients as they walk through your website and place orders. You need “eyes on the product” – this means that a lawyer or accountant needs to be there with you at all times, as well as a design professional for any changes that need to be made in your website or marketing-related materials. Execute plans consistently. This means that even if you think a, b or c didn’t work, you need to do it again in order to see if it was just the timing or certain circumstances that made it not work. Be succinct and try to avoid being long-winded in your marketing materials. It isn’t as important that your marketing materials read like an online novel as it is that a potential client can quickly and easily see what makes your business distinct from other similar businesses on the market. Don’t spend too much on advertising. The prime tool for any e-commerce business is its website. If you’ve been spending money on advertising and haven’t seen a return yet than you need to stop doing it. You should always be trying to generate new business. If you are doing the same type of marketing but don’t see any results then you need to start over, or maybe change your strategies. Marketing should be like trying out different dishes in a new restaurant – not ordering the same thing every time just because it’s the first one that sounded good the first time. Pay attention to your customers. Observing the customer journey is important for any business but especially so for e-commerce, because you can’t be sure which steps are most important until you see which potential customers are actually following those steps. You need to see what is slowing them down or what is drawing them in. You should also monitor online discussions and reviews and make sure they are positive and reflect your brand’s personality.

These rules aren’t just key to making money, they’re also the key to keeping it.
